Nutella is one of my firm childhood favourites because it reminds me of holidays in France and it just tastes so good. I am sure lots of you can relate to this! Sadly, despite all the health claims that manufacturers make, chocolate spread contains tons of refined sugar which causes chaos in your body. Not only is it bad for your teeth, but it contains completely empty calories - refined white sugar contains no nutrients. A high sugar intake can seriously disrupt your insulin production levels, eventually leading to diabetes, as well as causing obesity - sugar is actually addictive! AND sugar can cause inflammation in the body which is a possible cause of many chronic diseases.
Luckily this version comes with many more delicious health benefits, and whilst it does contain some maple syrup for sweetness you can swap this for your favourite liquid sweetener, use less of it, or even miss it out completely, but personally I like to add a little bit for the taste.
This chocolate spread has the most incredible silky texture that works well on top of almost everything! I like it best on my Banana and Maca Bread, toast, slices of apple and banana, a spoon... The coconut oil in it helps digestion, metabolism and boosts immunity thanks to its anti-bacterial properties and fatty acids, it also helps the Nutella melt on warm toast! The raw cacao and maca pack a great big superfood punch, increasing alertness and energy, and you'll get loads of lovely plant protein from the almonds and hazelnuts. Since chocolate spread is often advertised as a great source of calcium, it is definitely worth knowing that almonds actually contain more calcium per 100g than milk! So tuck in....
Ingredients: (makes 1 jar)
1 cup of almonds
1½ cups of hazelnuts
2 tablespoons of maca
2 tablespoons of raw cacao
1 tablespoon of coconut oil
tablespoons of maple syrup
Blend the nuts and coconut oil in a food processor until they form a completely smooth paste (this will take about 10 minutes), then remove from the processor and place in a large bowl. Slowly stir in the remaining ingredients one at a time until it is thoroughly mixed. Store in an airtight jar.
